Sun, sweat, and slight sea swells: Your weekend weather forecast

From your friendly weather enthusiasts (yes, we’re still here and still sober).

Newsroom

A classic seasonal low-pressure system has plopped itself over the region, which in normal-human terms means: the heat’s here, and it’s not in a rush to leave.

Today’s forecast? Mostly clear skies. So if you’re hoping for cloud cover to save your scalp, good luck. Winds will start off playing it cool, a light and variable 3 on the Beaufort scale. By afternoon, though, expect things to pick up, swinging southwest to northwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort. If you’re near a windward coast, brace yourself for gusts nudging 5 Beaufort. Not quite hat-snatching weather, but we’d advise you don’t wear a wig unless it’s pinned down. The sea? Calm to slightly rough, like your aunt at brunch.

Temperature-wise, it’s a scorcher inland: 38°C, so hydrate or evaporate. The western coast gets off slightly easier at 32°C, the rest of the coast sits at a sultry 34°C, and up in the mountains, it’s a relative chill at 28°C, cool enough for smug Instagram posts, if nothing else.

Tonight, the skies stay mostly clear. It's romantic, yes, but don’t count on stargazing if you’re in the mood for fog. By the wee hours, expect patches of mist, some low cloud, and the occasional cursed mosquito. Winds will be light again, shifting to a mix of northwesterly, northeasterly, and along the northern coast, southeasterly. Basically, pick a compass direction and you’ll probably be right. The sea stays tame. Temperatures will mellow out: 24°C inland and on the southeastern and eastern coasts, 22°C along the southwestern, western, and northern coasts, and a brisk 17°C in the mountains; sweater weather, if you’re dramatic.

Looking ahead to the weekend: Friday through Sunday stays mostly clear, with a few flirtatious clouds popping in now and then. Morning hours may see some low cloud, fog, or mist. It's nothing major, just enough to obscure your windshield and your will to live for about 10 minutes.

Temperatures creep up slightly on Friday and hold steady through Saturday, staying above what your grandparents would call “normal for this time of year.” Sunday brings a minor cooldown, though not enough to roast a marshmallow on the pavement, but we’re getting there.

So, sunscreen up, don’t forget the fan, and remember: it’s not the heat, it’s the humility.
